At this event, we will hear from 3 women who played crucial parts in the path to the Supreme Court Judgement, Susan Dalgety, Susan Smith and Sally Wainwright and discuss what the judgement means for women.
Sally Wainwright was the architect of the lesbian intervention in the For Women Scotland case in the UK Supreme Court, which determined that sex is biological - at least for the purposes of the Equality Act. She is a lesbian activist, co-founder of Lesbian Persistence, and a serial creator of women's spaces. Sally co-edited ‘Women's Rights, Gender Wrongs: the global impact of gender-identity ideology’ and contributed a chapter to The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht, discussing the attempt by transactivists to shut down the Audacious Women Festival which she founded.
Susan Smith is co-director of For Women Scotland (FWS), a campaign group dedicated to promoting and strengthening the rights of women and children. In April, FWS secured a landmark victory in the Supreme Court which confirmed that "sex" and "women" in the Equality Act were defined by biology. Susan contributed two chapters to the Sunday Times bestseller, The Women who Wouldn’t Wheesht. She is also a director of Beira’s Place, the rape crisis centre established in Edinburgh by JK Rowling and a board member of Women’s Platform for Action International (WoPAI), a global umbrella group for women’s organisations.
Susan Dalgety is a columnist for the Scotsman, author, grandmother. Susan travels when she can. She is an adviser to the McConnell International Foundation where she manages a scholarship programme in Malawi for marginalised girls to complete their secondary education. Her first book The Spirit of Malawi was published in 2021 by Luath Press. Co-editor with Lucy Hunter Blackburn of the Sunday Times best-seller The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht (published by Constable in 30 May 2024). Now co-edits The Frontline with Lucy - a feminist newsletter that launches on 30 May 2025. Twitter/X @DalgetySusan and @EthelWrites, Website: https://ethelwrites.com/
