Description
Can we talk?
Universities are ordinarily thought of as bastions of free thought, where new ideas can emerge and received wisdom can be challenged. Yet in recent years they have become plagued with incidents of censorship, with efforts to close down speaking events, bully and harass gender critical academics and suppress their research occurring with an alarming frequency.
This is an in-person fringe event for Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference in Brighton (online attendance also available).
Speakers Helen Joyce, Laura Favaro and Almut Gadow chaired by LVW Hon. President Baroness Sarah Ludford
More about our speakers:
Helen Joyce
Helen is the director for Sex Matters, a human-rights charity that campaigns for sex-based rights. Until April 2022 she was the Britain editor at the Economist. She is the author of Trans: Gender Identity and the New Battle for Women’s Rights, which is now available in paperback. Helen’s independent journalism can be found on her website: thehelenjoyce.com
Laura Favaro
Laura is a sociologist and educationalist. She has spent several years researching the ‘gender wars’ in academia. Her latest academic publication, Let Us Be Free From ‘Academentia’, critically examines the implementation of queer theory in universities.
Almut Gadow
Almut is a lawyer and linguist. Her most recent academic post was with the Open University, where she taught law. She was summarily dismissed from the OU for questioning their requirement to ‘liberate the curriculum’ by teaching gender identity. Almut is currently bringing an employment tribunal claim against the OU.
