The Conversion Practices bill - a clinical perspective

Our next online event will be with Dr Louise Irvine, on Monday 12 October at 7.00pm.

Dr Louise Irvine is co-chair of the Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender, a UK-incorporated network of regulated health and social care professionals that advocates for a cautious, evidence-based approach to youth gender medicine and gender dysphoria treatment.

Louise will discuss the harms of the “gender affirmative” model of care and the serious ethical problems with the government’s Conversion Practices Bill, which is currently undergoing pre-legislative scrutiny.

Louise was a GP for over 30 years in London, and was also a trainer and educator of GP registrars. As well as medical qualifications from Aberdeen University, she has diplomas in obstetrics and gynaecology and an MSc in General Practice from Kings College, London. As Chair of the Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign she was successful in helping to save the local hospital and maternity unit, having won a Judicial Review of the government’s decision to close it. In 2014, she was one of the Evening Standard's "1000 most influential people in London."

Louise was a member of Council of the British Medical Association and Secretary of Doctors in Unite for many years and stood twice for the National Health Action Party against Jeremy Hunt in SW Surrey; in 2017 coming second with 20% of the vote.

As co-chair of the Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender, Louise has a special interest in evidence based medicine, women’s health and child health.
