Fiona McAnena is Director of Campaigns at Sex Matters, a UK-registered charity which promotes human rights where they relate to biological sex, advances education about sex and the law, and promotes the sound administration of the law in relation to sex and equality. Sex Matters was an intervenor in the momentous case of For Women Scotland v Scottish Ministers which determined that sex in the UK’s Equality Act 2010 means, and has always meant, biological sex.
Fiona joined Sex Matters after five years as a volunteer with Fair Play For Women, working across its campaigns and directing its successful work in sport. She helped bring a successful legal action against the UK government in 2020, ensuring that the question on sex in the national Census must be answered based on sex as legally recorded.
Fiona grew up in Northern Ireland, read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, and worked in brand management and marketing strategy in multinational businesses for thirty years.
